This is especially critical to our area due to these facts:
- The North Fork and Shelter Island has the oldest population in NY State
- 27% of our residents are age 65+ which is double the percentage of Suffolk County
- Our Senior population is estimated to increase by 37% over the next few years
The Long Island Geriatric Education Center - one of approximately 48 such programs nationwide - was established in January 2002 with a grant from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services. The East End Extension allows the LIGEC (Long Island Geriatric Education Center) to provide educational outreach to gerontology and geriatric professionals on the East End.
Mission:
To train health professionals and keep current on relevant geriatric / gerontologic practices for the well being of older adults.

- Multicultural aging
- Evidence-based learning
- Geriatric interdisciplinary team training.
