Eastern Long Island Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received a Hospital Compare overall rating from Medicare of four out of five stars. ELIH is one of only two hospitals on Long Island, and the only hospital in Suffolk County, to have received a rating as high as four stars.
According to the Medicare.gov website, the overall rating “summarizes up to 57 quality measures on Hospital Compare reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia.” It represents how well each hospital performs, on average, to other hospitals in the US. The most common overall rating is three stars.
The overall rating is broken down into more specific categories such as “Survey of Patients’ Experiences” and “Timely & Effective Care.” ELIH ranks higher than the national average in patient satisfaction, specifically pertaining to cleanliness and patient understanding of treatment and care plan. The amount of patients who reported that they would definitely recommend the hospital exceeds the national average as well. In addition, ELIH scored more overall patient ratings of 9 or 10 on a scale of 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest) than the majority of other hospitals across the nation.
ELIH is a 90-bed, full service, community hospital that has been committed to delivering excellence in patient care and meeting the healthcare needs of the North Fork and Shelter Island since 1905. It is an award-winning hospital and has received numerous accolades for high quality patient care. In spring of 2017, ELIH received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit that sets the highest national standards for patient safety, quality, and transparency in health care. Medicare’s Hospital Compare overall rating of four out of five stars confirms that ELIH continues to strive toward excellence in care and safety on the individual patient level each and every day.
